5 European countries recently called time on widely used substances known as PFAS or “forever chemicals”, proposing a ban because they accumulate in the environment, leading to potential harm to human health and ecosystems. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used in 14 industries and one of the largest is the textile industry. They are used in workwear, military wear, the automotive industry and the home furnishing industry, where they are applied topically to provide protection against oil, water and different stains.
The chemical manufacturer Sarex Chemicals Ltd., Mumbai/India, has developed Ecoguard-New, a new generation of fluorine-free water repellent, which is better than the conventional paraffin wax based and acrylate-based water repellent. Ecoguard-New was applied on 100 % cotton, polyester and polyamide and tested for durability. It has shown very good results. Ecoguard-New can be applied on sportswear, outdoor textiles, and protective wear and also on garments and apparel. The product is bluesign approved, REACH compliant and Oeko-Tex compliant. It is based on sustainable chemistry and free from paraffin wax and formaldehyde.
Sarex is following its objective to provide environmentally friendly solutions and swings its focus to manufacture fluorine-free water repellents. Until now no fluorine-free chemical has been made commercially available which can give oil repellency. Sarex is also trying to develop a solution to this by working in unison with the leading fabric manufacturers.
