Restrictions on PAHs used in artificial turf

The European Commission has adopted a restriction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in rubber granules and mulches used as infill on artificial sports pitches and playgrounds.

The allowed concentration limits for 8 PAHs will be lowered to 20 mg/kg as recommended by scientific committees of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), Helsinki/Finland The current limits are 100 mg/kg or 1,000 mg/kg following entry 28 of the List of restrictions (Annex XVII).

The restriction, initiated by the Dutch authorities, applies from August 10, 2022.
