Professor Franz Effenberger turns 90


On April 7, 2020, Prof. Dr. Franz Effenberger, the former head of the of the ITCF Denkendorf, Denkendorf/Germany, which is part of the German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research Denkendorf (DITF), Denkendorf/Germany, celebrated his 90th birthday.

His fields of work include the chemistry of aromatics, heterocycles and amino acids, the chemical principles of molecular electronics, applications of enzymes in synthesis and the development of ultra-thin organic layers. Prof. Effenberger has submitted 350 publications and 55 patents in cooperation with renowned companies. He imitated the research on carbon fiber technologies at the ITCF in cooperation with the carbon fiber manufacturer SGL Carbon SE, Wiesbaden/Germany.

Effenberger studied textile engineering in Krefeld and chemistry at the Technical University of Stuttgart, where he finally received his doctorate in 1958. In 1964, he habilitated in organic chemistry. After a one-year research stay at the University of Michigan and years as a Winnacker Fellow, he was appointed Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences in 1971 and Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart. In addition to the Humboldt Research Award, Effenberger also received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class.
