Basaltic lava can be used to produce fibers as well as textile yarns. Basalt yarn has valuable properties especially for some special applications: it is heat resistant and does not burn, but it is brittle, especially when the yarn is kinked. Thus, it is difficult to use basalt yarns in surface manufacturing processes such as knitting and weaving.

Dotex Wirkwaren GmbH, Donaueschingen/Germany, has now succeeded in producing a 100% basalt mesh fabric from this yarn. The result is a basalt mesh fabric.
