Over 80 textile manufacturers and fashion brands accepted the Recycled Polyester Challenge from Textile Exchange, O’Donnell, TX/USA. Among them is the manufacturer of membranes and functional materials Sympatex Technologies GmbH, Unterföhring/Germany. The aim of the Recycled Polyester Challenge is to increase the volume of recycled polyester (rPET) sourced globally from the current level of just 14%, to 45% by 2025 and even 90% by 2030.
Sympatex's goal is to use 100% rPET for the outer and under fabrics of its laminates by 2025.
Textile Exchange and the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action, convened by UN Climate Change, have launched this joint initiative to drive a further market shift towards the use of recycled polyester and the associated reduction of greenhouse gases. As such, the Recycled Polyester Challenge is a key catalyst for sustainable change in the textile and apparel industry.
Polyester (PET), with about 52% of the total fiber volume, is the most widely used fiber in the apparel industry. rPET has a significantly lower carbon footprint than conventional PET.
